Gardner, a former Mathew Brady assistant who had previously taken several photographs of Lincoln and ran Brady’s Washington studio, recently set out on his own and opened his own studio in Washington. Lincoln visited Gardner’s studio the day before the grand opening to avoid the crowds. Lincoln’s assistant John Hay accompanied the president.
